Nutritionist Nikki Hart says if you’re looking to reduce meat consumption for health or environmental reasons, you’re probably best to steer clear of faux meats.
“All of the foods we eat have a nutritional consequence and a planetary consequence,” she says. “Just because something’s vegetarian doesn’t mean that it doesn’t have an environmental consequence.”
Any processed food, she points out, comes out of some sort of factory, which uses resources and creates waste – no matter what it’s composed of.
And while there seems to be no shortage of information about the potential negative health consequences of eating meat, Hart thinks there needs to be more education around its animal-friendly mimics.
“These products are being developed to taste nice,” she says. “What makes things taste nice is sodium and fat and sugar.
“They’re not as low fat or as low calorie as you think they are because they’re vegetarian.”
